I think a lot of people envision \u201chealthy diets\u201d being full of big salads and bean sprouts and tofu, and while there\u2019s certainly nothing wrong with those things, that\u2019s not at all how we eat. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.100daysofrealfood.com\/real-food-defined-a-k-a-the-rules\/\">Our definition of real food<\/a> of course includes a variety of fresh organic greens, but also a lot of other things like whole grains and dairy and fruit and even locally-raised grass-fed cheeseburgers. :)<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"640\" height=\"426\" fetchpriority=\"high\" src=\"https:\/\/www.100daysofrealfood.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/salad.jpg\" alt=\"\" data-skip-lazy class=\"wp-image-2000\" title=\"Blue Cheese, Walnut, Apple Salad\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.100daysofrealfood.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/salad.jpg 640w, https:\/\/www.100daysofrealfood.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/salad-400x266.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>So when I recently caught myself craving a certain salad, which has never before happened in my 34 years, I of course felt compelled to share it with all our<a href=\"http:\/\/www.facebook.com\/100daysofrealfood\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> facebook fans.<\/a> And I also asked them about their favorite salad combinations as well (below) because I\u2019ve learned that not all salads are created equal. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Over are the days of somewhat soggy iceberg lettuce pieces topped with stale looking carrots and a side of highly processed salad dressing.<\/strong> If you start with some fresh greens and top them with the perfect mix of \u201caccessories\u201d&nbsp; I am learning that salads can actually be kind of good. And if we really come up with a super tasty combination of accessories my kids might even have a little salad, too. So here are some ideas to keep us all from getting burnt out\u2026and as always leave any additional suggestions you might have in the comments below!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-salad-ideas\">Salad Ideas<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Mixed greens with apples, toasted walnuts, blue cheese, and olive oil (pictured above)\u2026the salad that inspired this post!<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><br>Variations of this salad:<\/span> <ul><li>Add dried cranberries, hold the blue cheese, and use a balsamic vinegar with the olive oil<\/li><li>Add strawberries, use roasted pecans instead of walnuts, top with salmon and balsamic vinegar<\/li><li>Gorgonzola or feta cheese instead of blue cheese<\/li><li>Pears instead of apples<\/li><li>Add grilled chicken <\/li><\/ul><\/li><li>Spinach with hard boiled egg, bacon, avocado, and a warm bacon dressing (with our without blue cheese)<\/li><li>Mixed greens, goat cheese, <a href=\"..\/2010\/06\/09\/recipe-salad-with-a-twist-including-glazed-nuts\/\">glazed pecans<\/a>, locally-grown cherry tomatoes, and balsamic vinegar<\/li><li><a href=\"..\/2011\/03\/15\/recipe-cobb-salad-with-blue-cheese-dressing\/\">Cobb salad with blue cheese dressing<\/a><\/li><li>Spinach or mixed greens with apples, walnuts, feta or asiago cheese, shredded carrots, avocado, raw garlic (sliced and diced very small) and sometimes some black, garbanzo, or kidney beans for more substance topped with olive oil and a little rice wine vinegar<\/li><li>Shredded Napa cabbage, red cabbage, edamame, julienned carrots, cucumbers, peanuts, cilantro &amp;
