{"id":1445,"date":"2011-05-06T15:31:07","date_gmt":"2011-05-06T19:31:07","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.100daysofrealfood.com\/?p=1445"},"modified":"2021-12-01T10:19:56","modified_gmt":"2021-12-01T15:19:56","slug":"problem-refined-sweeteners","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.100daysofrealfood.com\/problem-refined-sweeteners\/","title":{"rendered":"The Problem with Refined Sweeteners"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.100daysofrealfood.com\/2011\/05\/06\/mini-pledge-week-9-no-refined-sweeteners\/sugar\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-1446\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" fetchpriority=\"high\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-1446\" title=\"sugar\" src=\"https:\/\/www.100daysofrealfood.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/sugar.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"431\" height=\"278\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.100daysofrealfood.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/sugar.jpg 431w, https:\/\/www.100daysofrealfood.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/sugar-400x258.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.100daysofrealfood.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/sugar-360x232.jpg 360w, https:\/\/www.100daysofrealfood.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/sugar-180x116.jpg 180w, https:\/\/www.100daysofrealfood.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/sugar-150x97.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 431px) 100vw, 431px\" \/><\/a>As I\u2019ve said before, it is not necessarily the sugar itself (yes, white sugar is technically \u201cnatural,\" albeit highly refined), but it is the quantity in which our society consumes sugar that concerns me. <strong>What have things come to if we can\u2019t even have a cracker or a bowl of cereal or a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.100daysofrealfood.com\/2011\/03\/18\/mini-pledge-week-2-beverages\/\">beverage<\/a> unless it has been sweetened?<\/strong> Come on, sugar is in almost everything these days even when you least expect it.<\/p>\n<p>I get so many questions about sweeteners, especially from those wondering why we\u2019ve chosen honey and maple syrup as our sweeteners of choice. The moral of the story is\u2014and most experts would agree\u2014sugar is sugar, and no matter what form of sugar you choose always consume it in moderation. Whether it is white table sugar, raw sugar, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.100daysofrealfood.com\/2010\/03\/30\/high_fructose_corn_syrup_101\/\">high-fructose corn syrup<\/a>, or maple syrup they are all\u2014for the most part\u2014sugars. We selected honey and maple syrup as our sweeteners of choice because they are two of the least processed \u201csugars\u201d out there, and they are also difficult to find in highly processed foods. Honey and maple syrup also have slightly more nutrients than highly refined sweeteners like white table sugar, although\u2014once again\u2014all sweeteners are similar in the fact that overall they are high in calories and low in nutrients.<\/p>\n<p>During our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.100daysofrealfood.com\/original-100-days-of-real-food-blog-series\/\">100 Days of Real Food pledge<\/a>, when we were <a href=\"https:\/\/www.100daysofrealfood.com\/real-food-defined-a-k-a-the-rules\/\">restricted to honey and maple syrup<\/a> as well as nothing out of a package with more than 5 ingredients, we ended up having to make all the \u201csweetened\u201d foods we ate ourselves. I could not find any store-bought \u201csweet treats\u201d that followed all of our rules\u2014and trust me I looked! Since this sweetener restriction forces you to make sweetened foods from scratch you can see and control how much sweetener is being added. And chances are you will use a lot less sweetener than some factory.<\/p>\n<p>So back to how Americans are consuming sugar in overwhelming amounts these days...I saw an interesting statistic highlighted on the news:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Health experts recommend we eat no more than eight teaspoons of sugar a day. But on average, Americans consume four times that much.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>In case you are challenged with simple math (like me) that means we are, on average, consuming 32 teaspoons a day! Also how about this for \u201cfood for thought\u201d from <em>New York Times<\/em> <em>Magazine <\/em>article <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2011\/04\/17\/magazine\/mag-17Sugar-t.html?_r=2\">\u201cIs Sugar Toxic?\u201d<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Sugar is likely the \u201cdietary cause of several other chronic ailments widely considered to be diseases of Western lifestyles \u2014 heart disease, hypertension and many common cancers among them.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>In closing, there are two key takeaways when it comes to sweeteners. Never choose an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.100daysofrealfood.com\/2010\/04\/16\/are-you-being-fooled-by-the-imitation\/\">imitation sweetener<\/a> (like splenda) over the real thing, and no matter what sweetener you choose always consume it in moderation.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>As I\u2019ve said before, it is not necessarily the sugar itself (yes, white sugar is technically \u201cnatural,\" albeit highly refined), but it is the quantity in which our society consumes sugar that concerns me.
