For years I was right there on that bandwagon bingeing on everything from low-fat Snackwells cookies to fat-free flavored yogurt to low-fat ice cream. And as it turns out, according to <a href=\"http:\/\/michaelpollan.com\/\">Michael Pollan<\/a>, \u201cWe\u2019ve gotten fat on low-fat products.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.100daysofrealfood.com\/2011\/04\/15\/mini-pledge-week-6-no-low-fat-lite-or-nonfat-food-products\/yogurt\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-1393\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"180\" height=\"180\" fetchpriority=\"high\" src=\"https:\/\/www.100daysofrealfood.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/yogurt.jpg\" alt=\"\" data-skip-lazy class=\"wp-image-1393\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.100daysofrealfood.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/yogurt.jpg 180w, https:\/\/www.100daysofrealfood.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/yogurt-96x96.jpg 96w, https:\/\/www.100daysofrealfood.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/yogurt-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.100daysofrealfood.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/yogurt-60x60.jpg 60w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 180px) 100vw, 180px\" \/><\/a><figcaption>photo credit: zeer.com<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Here\u2019s a direct quote from <a href=\"http:\/\/michaelpollan.com\/\">Pollan\u2019s<\/a> book <em>Food Rules<\/em> that explains it all:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>The forty-year-old campaign to create low-fat and nonfat versions of traditional foods has been a failure: We\u2019ve gotten fat on low-fat products. Why? Because removing the fat from foods doesn\u2019t necessarily make them nonfattening. Carbohydrates can also make you fat, and many low- and nonfat foods boost the sugars to make up for the loss of flavor \u2026 You\u2019re better off eating the real thing in moderation than bingeing on \u201clite\u201d food products packed with sugars and salt.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Another New York Times bestselling author, Mark Bittman, agrees in his book <em>Food Matters. <\/em>He says, \u201cThe low-fat craze caused millions, maybe tens of millions, of Americans actually to gain weight, because they were reaching for \u2018low-fat\u2019 but high-calorie carbs.\u201d And right on cue directly from Pollan\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/dp\/0143114964?tag=100dayofreafo-20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\"><em>In Defense of Food<\/em><\/a>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>At this point you\u2019re probably saying to yourself, <em>Hold on just a minute. Are you really saying the whole low-fat deal was bogus? But my supermarket is still packed with low-fat this and no-cholesterol that! My doctor is still on me about my cholesterol and telling me to switch to low-fat everything.<\/em> I was flabbergasted at the news too, because no one in charge \u2013 not in government, not in the public health community \u2013 has dared to come out and announce: <em>Um, you know everything we\u2019ve been telling you for the last thirty years about the links between dietary fat and heart disease? And fat and cancer? And fat and fat? Well, this just in: It now appears that none of it was true. We sincerely regret the error.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>So let\u2019s put the low-fat craze behind us and move forward by embracing the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.100daysofrealfood.com\/2010\/06\/24\/not-cleaning-your-plate\/\">right portions<\/a> of real food and real food only. <\/strong>No more faked low-fat products where according to <a href=\"http:\/\/michaelpollan.com\/\">Pollan<\/a>, \u201cfats in things like sour cream and yogurt are replaced with hydrogenated oils\u201d and \u201cthe cream in \u2018whipped cream\u2019 and \u2018<a href=\"http:\/\/deliciouslyorganic.net\/homemade-coffee-creamer\/\">coffee creamer<\/a>\u2019 are replaced with corn starch.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And just to be clear this applies to all reduced fat products, including milk. When the fat is removed from dairy products like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.100daysofrealfood.com\/2010\/08\/12\/milk-%E2%80%93-good-or-bad\/\">milk<\/a> some of the beneficial nutrients are lost with the fat as well. We just recently switched to whole milk ourselves, and I was honestly a little scared. I drank skim milk up until last year after all! But along with reducing our overall consumption of milk it has actually been a surprisingly smooth transition for us. And after learning the shocking truth behind what we\u2019ve been told for so many years\u2026I\u2019ve never looked at another low-fat product the same again.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>When I first learned that the whole low-fat campaign was pretty much a hoax I was absolutely shocked as well.
